The purpose of the study is to develop an altruistic behavior scale for measuring adults altruistic behavior and to validate it. An open survey based on reviewing previous studies and analysis of altruistic behavior was conducted on adults (n=108). From 43 preliminary items, 38 items which reflect Korean cultural features were chosen as the final preliminary items by counseling psychologists. After a pilot test (n=387) which analyzed exploratory factors and items, an altruistic behavior scale was developed. The scale consists of 15 items of 3 sub-factors : instant altruistic-behavior, empathic altruistic-behavior, and social altruistic-behavior. Main study (n=554) verified Conformity of a 3 factor-model. Concurrent validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity and reliability were also verified. The results show positive correlations between this scale, and the helping behavior scale, empathic concern scale, and perspective-taking scale. However, there were weak correlations between this scale and the social desirability scale. Overall, the scale was proven to be valid for measuring altruistic behavior. Finally, the academic significance and limitations of the study are discussed.
