The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of family communication patterns and leisure lifestyles on school happiness in elementary school students. Family communication as a basis of individual socialization and leisure lifestyles as a role for psychological well-being and quality of life may be considered factors affecting elementary schoolers’happiness. A survey method was employed with 278 elementary school students’ questionnaires. The result follows. First, with correlation analyses, the conversation-oriented family communication pattern was positively correlated with the positive leisure lifestyle types such as rational planning, sensory pursuit, and relation- centered leisure lifestyle, whereas the conformity-oriented family communication pattern was positively correlated with a negative type of leisure lifestyle - leisure lethargy. Second, according to hierarchical regression analysis, both family communication patterns and leisure lifestyles showed 42.5% explanatory power of factors that determine school happiness among elementary school students. On the other hand, only the communication-orientation in the family communication but all the four sub-factors in the leisure lifestyle have significant effects on the school happiness of the elementary school students. Among the individual factors, the factor that has the greatest influence on the school happiness was the conversation-orientated family communication pattern. This study has an implication in that the joint effects of family and leisure lifestyle was examined, which have been studied relatively poorly in leisure studies.
