The purpose of the study is to explore the need for music appreciation education and to investigate musical selections for music appreciation for the development of musical competency elementary school stages. The content of the study is focused on the following aspects: firstly, how music appreciation takes place; secondly, what does music appreciation education contribute to develop musical competency?; and thirdly, whether music selections and activities contained in elementary music textbooks are properly structured as materials for developing musical competency. The major results of the study show that music appreciation is an important learning area for children to acquire musical sensitivity to sounds and understanding in the process of musical learning. Therefore, it is important that music curriculum and school music textbooks should provide more comprehensive and systematically organized appreciation materials for learners’ musical experiences. In conclusion, music appreciation education is an important area for the learner s musical competency. Also, the study recommends that the elementary school music textbooks should present more diversified genres of music and activities and further research studies on this subject should be pursued.
