쿠사마 야요이의 작품은 간결하면서 복잡하다. 그녀의 초기부터 최근까지의 작품은 크고 작은 점으로 구성된 ‘도트(dot) 무 늬’가 가득한 작품을 지속해왔다. 순간성과 반복성, 연속성과 무한성을 내포한 ‘점’은 무한 공간을 구축하는 가장 중요한 요소 이자 조형적 주체가 된다. 본 논문의 목적은 쿠사마 야요이의 작품 속 대표적인 조형적 요소인 점과 거울이라는 매체로 그녀 가 만든 무한 공간 처리 방식과 특징을 분석하고 ‘자기 닮음’과 ‘자기 소멸’을 통한 무한 공간 실현의 반복적 순환성이 가지는 의미를 고찰하고자 한다. 특히 점과 거울을 통한 반복은 쿠사마의 작품에서 중요한 형식으로 실제와 가상의 융합적 체험을 전달한다. 또한 거울 방이라는 닫힌 공간에서 하나의 점으로 속박된 신체와 우주와 같이 경계를 알 수 없이 무한하게 열린 공간이라는 이중적 성격을 제시하며 의식과 무의식을 뛰어넘는 시각적 확장을 제공한다. 이러한 특징은 보이지 않는 우주 공간으로부터 작은 조각들이 분해되고 반사하는 것처럼 현실에서 느끼지 못한 낯선 아름다움이라는 새로운 세계를 경험하는 것이다. 이를 통해 쿠사마는 제로(zero)와 비움-공(空)의 상징인 점과 거울로 현실과 비현실을 뛰어넘는 모든 가능성의 공간 을 실현하였고 마음 속 무한을 드러내고자 하였다.
