The moderating effect of unconditional self-acceptance on actual-ideal self-discrepancy and fear of negative evaluation was verified with 263 participants. The group with low self-acceptance showed higher fear of negative evaluation in both conditions of low and high self-discrepancy compared to the group with high self-acceptance. In the group with low self-acceptance, fear of negative evaluation increased gradually when self-discrepancy increased, whereas in the group with high self-acceptance, fear of negative evaluation increased sharply when self-discrepancy increased. We discussed the conditions that self-discrepancy results in dysfunctional outcome and how self-acceptance can lead to psychological health.
