Objective: The purpose of this study was to obtain practical information and develop guidelines on the experiences of deaf people in achieving marital happiness, by developing a deeper understanding of their marital relationships and identifying the phenomena and contexts which they experience during the marital adjustment process. Method: To achieve this objective, the study was organized around the question, “how do deaf people experience the marital adjustment process?” Among various qualitative research methods, the grounded theory approach proposed by Strauss and Corbin (1996 ) was used to pursue the study’s objective. The participants in the project were 15 deaf people, who included 6 married men and 9 married women. Research data was collected by in-depth interviews. Results: Our findings are that the marital adjustment process in the subjects studied exhibits a twisted U-shaped pattern that follows a sequence of six stages: “fantasy,” “broken fantasy,” “chaos,” “conflict,” “negotiation,” and “stabilization.” Conclusion: The findings of this research are intended to serve as a basis for developing education and counseling programs to assist deaf couples with the marital adjustment process.
