지역마다 ‘마을공동체 회복’에 대한 관심에서 생활예술/문화 활동에 대한 논의가 활발하게이루어지고 있다. 예술의 사회적 가치를 추구하는 생활예술의 등장은 많은 동호회들을 출현시켰고, 이에 대한 사회적 학문적 관심이 높아지고 있다. 공동체, 사회적 자본, 공동체 학습등의 분야에서는 이들 동호회 활동을 지역사회의 공동체의식 강화 방안으로 보는 관점이 지배적이다. 본 연구는 마을극단으로 불리는 연극동호회에 관한 사례연구를 통하여 생활예술동호회에서 구성원들이 무엇을 경험하고, 그 의미를 어떻게 (재)구성하는지를 탐색하였다. 특히 동호회 내부의 관계만이 아니라 지역사회가 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 참여관찰과 연구참여자들에 대한 심층면담을 통하여 그들이 경험하는 바와 그 의미가 형성되는 과정을 설명, 해석, 이해하고자 하였다. 해당 연극동호회는 인적 구성에 있어서 세대와 지역의 경계를 넘나드는 다양성을 특징으로 하고 있다. 자료수집과 분석을 통하여 도출된 주요 문화적 주제는 ‘자유로운 영혼들의 느슨한 관계’로 표현되는 자발성과 극단내 구성원간 상호이해와 소통에 이르지 못하는 ‘초월적 자아재현’의 한계였다. 동호회 내부와 마을의 관계에서 나타나는 긴장과 갈등이 이에 작용하는 과정을 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 평생교육/학습의 연구주제인 공동체학습, 사회적 자본 등에 대한 기존 접근을 검토하고 과제를 논의하였다.
This article is case study on community(urban village) based a theater club, which aims to clarify its cultural practices and the meanings of community. The researcher have conducted participation observation and in-depth interview for almost three years. The theater club have been active for 10 years since 2008. It have been made of various people from 20s to 50s who had lived in and out of the community. They have pursued liberal relationship within club which have not been bounded by existing social order and rule, for example hierarchies of age, social status, and talent. In reading and interpreting the play script and embodying characters in the play, they have communicated with other club members. They have felt the pleasures of playing through participation of theater club. But, when some members suggested existing social organizational principle based on responsibility and efficiency, they couldn’t communicate with other members because It was different from culture of club. The members passionate about their performance in the play, but they have stood in a different social position according to the experiences of various social relations in the community. It was discussed the meaning of cultural practices in the theater club.
