In its relatively short twenty-year history in South Korea, music therapy has seen a meteoric rise in popularity and momentum in formal education. This paper highlights important facets of the success of the field in transitioning from having no presence in Korea to establishing networks on a global scale. Some of these key features include the origin of the introduction of music therapy to Korea, as well as the cultural permeance that led the discipline to adopt rigorous academic ideologies and career-focused pathways. Serving as a case study for the successful development of a nascent field in an international setting, this paper explores the strengths and complications that have arisen throughout the development of music therapy in Korea and offers lessons and strategies for the introduction of other such programs in Korea and beyond.
비교적 짧은 20년의 역사를 가진 한국 음악치료 교육은 일반의 인식을 높여옴과 동시에 빠른 추진력으로 성장해 올 수 있었다. 이 논문은 국내 최초의 음악치료가 어떻게 단기간 동안 세계적인 규모의 네트워크를 구축하며 발전해 올 수 있었는지, 그 성공의 주요한 측면들을 조명하고 있다. 여기에는 음악치료가 어떻게 시작되었는지, 정규 교육과정에 어떻게 받아들여졌는지, 문화권 속에 어떻게 직업으로 자리 잡을 수 있었는지 등을 포함한다. 특별히 한국 음악치료의 발전의 과정에서 드러난 강점들과 그 밖의 여러 관련 내용들은 아직 음악치료가 도입되지 않은 여러 다른 나라들의 음악치료 도입에 참고가 될 수 있다는 점에서 사례연구로서의 유용한 가치를 갖는다 할 것이다.
