허스트(P.H.Hirst)의 자유교육론에서는 개인이 지식의 형식(forms of knowledge)에 입문하여 합리적 사고를 형성하여 자유로운 마음에 이를 수 있다고 본다. 한편 자유교육론에 대해서는 총체적 마음의 발달을 가져올 수 없다는 비판이 제기되어 왔다. 기존의 논의에서는 전기 허스트의 지식의 형식이 아닌 후기의 사회적 실제(a practice) 개념에 입각하여, 즉 삶의 기준의 성격을 재규정하는 것으로 총체적 마음의 발달이 가능하다고 본다. 19C 서양 철학자인 니체(F. Nietzsche)는 인간을 신체(Leib)를 가지고 욕망에 의해 관점적(Perspective)으로 인식을 하는 존재로 본다. 그에 의하면 자유교육론에서 강조하는 합리적 사고는 현상, 즉 결과를 원인으로 간주하여 대상을 인과적으로 해석, 즉 판단하는 것이다. 이는 인간의 관념체계로 파악이 되지 않는 삶의 사태 및 대상을 누군가의 관념체계 안으로 귀속시켜 자신의 상황 및 사고를 합리화하는 것에 불과한 것이다. 니체에 의하면 인간은 힘에의 의지(Der Wille Zur Macht)를 가진 존재이다. 개개인은 인간의 관념체계로 파악이 되지 않는 대상을 기존의 관념체계 안으로 끌어들이는 방식으로 인식을 하는 자신의 의식구조(틀)의 특성을 스스로의 의지의 힘에 의해 성찰해 감으로써 자유로운 마음에 이를 수 있다. 이때 총체적 마음의 발달이 이루어질 수 있다. 니체의 존재론에 기초할 때 자유교육론에 대한 비판인 지식과 총체적 마음의 관련에 대한 불충분한 설명은, 인간이 지식을 습득한 결과로 형성할 합리적 사고가 자유로운 마음의 발달을 어떻게 가져오는가의 문제를 제대로 설명하지 못하기 때문에 발생하는 문제로 보아야 할 것이다.
Hirst s theory of liberal education believes that individuals can initiate the forms of knowledge and form rational thinking to reach a free mind. On the other hand, there has been criticism that liberal education cannot bring about the development of the whole mind. Existing discussion believe that the development of the whole mind is possible based on the concept of social practice, which is to redefine the nature of the standard of life, rather than the forms of knowledge. 19C Western philosopher Nietzsche considers humans to be perceive by desire with a Leib. According to him, rational thinking emphasized in liberal education theory is to interpret phenomena, that is, results as causes, and to interpret them casually, that is, to judge them. This is just a justification of one s situation and thoughts by attributing the situation and object of life that are not understood by the human ideological frame to someone s ideological frame. According to Nietzsche, humans are beings with the will to power (der wille zur macht). Individuals can reach a free mind when they reflect on the characteristics of their own consciousness frame(framework) to draw objects that are not identified by the human ideological frame into the existing ideological frame by the power of their own will. At this time, the whole mind s development can be achieved. Based on Nietzsche s theory existence, an insufficient explanation of the relationship between knowledge and the whole mind that is a criticism of rationalistic liberal education should be regarded as a problem that arises because it does not properly explain how rational thinking that will result in free mind s development.
