In this study, the new research method, art-based research, has some relevance in the field of art psychotherapy, and the possibility and application of art psychotherapy in art psychotherapy are investigated. Therefore, the literature on art-based research and art psychotherapy is studied. The results are as follows. First, art work of art psychotherapy and art-based research have similar characteristics, and this has the potential as a research method that allows art-based research to contain the specificity of art psychotherapy. Second, art-based research contains visual language, that is, an image, which is the specificity of art psychotherapy, which can be used as a method to explain the clinical practice of art psychotherapy. Third, art psychotherapists have strengths as researchers in art-based research that is similar to qualitative research and uses art. Through this study, it is meaningful to suggest that art-based research has the potential to be used as a research method that can contribute to revealing the specificity and uniqueness of art psychotherapy and revealing the essence of art psychotherapy that has not been revealed through quantitative research.
