In this article, I explored educational value of mortality salience (MS). First, I examined Terror management Theory (TMT) that is the theoretical background of mortality salience. The ‘Terror’ means ‘terror about death’ and if terror of death is aroused, human beings psychologically try to manage the terror of death. According to TMT, humans acquire an ideal symbol system like linguistic symbols, in their own cultures and they have been understood by the world. Also, ‘death’ is one object of understanding. If one is aware about own’s death, their ‘cultural world view’ appears, is strengthened, and their defense process is started by attempting to understand death. In addition, ‘self-esteem’ is in charge of the defense about anxiety of death and after the awareness of death, selfesteem is strengthened. Based on the above theory, I studied detailed psychological processes and structure after arousal of MS. When one’s MS is activated, cultural world view is operated and it is strengthened. Subsequently, one adheres to one’s own cultural standards or values. For example, after MS doing virtue has been increased and awareness of death has made participant consider attitudes of peace with others. In addition, one looks back on one’s own life and considers goals or meanings of one’s life, as self-esteem is operating. Through that a series of processes, terror of death could be moderated. ‘Mindfulness of death’(死念, maranasati), which is a Buddhist meditation was also suggested in this article, as it is tool of MS activation. Unlike using methods to activate MS in TMT, mindfulness of death has a function to cultivate an attitude of acceptance of death besides arousal of MS. Therefore, mindfulness of death contains educational values. Lastly, educational meanings of MS were explored. First, awareness of death can make people consider their lives and affect a change of their ‘attitudes of life’. Second, fundamentally to prevent suicide, it is possible that death education should be conducted from elementary school. Also, carrying out death education in early years can make students arouse their own death and they will consider their lives. Third, death education which activates MS will affect attitudes of death and will provide a better understanding about death.
