종래의 「삼일독립선언서」에 나타난 사상적 측면은 주로 윌슨의 민족자결주의의 영향과의 관련 속에서 평가되어 온 감이 있다. 그러나 삼일운동에 천도교가 깊숙이 개입하고 있었다고 한다면, 「삼일독립선언서」에도 천도교적 사상이 들어있으리라는 점은 충분히 짐작할 수 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 점에 착안하여 천도교의 사상적 연원인 동학, 그리고 참동학을 자칭한 증산교, 그리고 이들을 계승한 원불교에 나타난 개벽사상을 중심으로 「삼일독립선언서」를 독해하였다. 그 결과 개벽종교의 핵심사상인 ‘개척정신‧전환의식‧도덕주의’가 「삼일독립선언서」에도 그대로 나타나 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 단지 「삼일독립선언서」 뿐만 아니라 한국의 ‘근대’ 자체를 개화가 아닌 개벽의 시각에서 다시 보아야할 필요가 있음을 시사한다.
“The Proclamation of Korean Independence” has been analyzed mainly in relation to the Wilson s Self-Determination. But considering the strong relation of Chondogyo and the March 1st Movement, we can guess that the thought of Chondogyo influenced “The Proclamation of Korean Independence” This study focuses on Gaebyok thought in Donhak as a origin of Chondogyo, Zeungsangyo which maintained true Donghak, and Won Buddhism which succeeded them, and analyzed “The Proclamation of Korean Independence.” As a result, we can find that the core thought of Gaebyok Religion, for example frontier spirit, the thought of transformation of civilization, moral pacifism and so on, “The Proclamation of Korean Independence.” This result suggests that not only “The Proclamation of Korean Independence” but also Korean modernity itself need to be approached from the viewpoint of Gaebyok thought.
