종교 교과의 효용성은 유일하고 절대적인 지식을 가르치는 데 있는 것이 아니라 학생 스스로 삶의 의미를 깨닫고 관조할 수 있는 계기를 제공하는 데 있다. 학생의 자각없이 맹목적으로 종교 교리나 신앙을 수용하도록 하는 것은 오히려 종교교육을 하지 않는 것만 못하다. 공교육에서의 종교교육은 경직되고 불변적인 가치를 내포하는 교과관으로부터 벗어나 종교교과를 통해 학습자들이 스스로 사고하고 판단할 수 있는 역동적인 종교수업으로 변화시킬 필요가 있다. 그런 점에서 종교교과는 ‘해석된’ 내용들의 체계이기 보다는 ‘해석되어야 할’ 텍스트에 가깝다. 교과의 내용과 구성이 아무리 정교한 내적 일관성에 의해 짜여져 있다하더라도 교사와 학생의 역동적인 상호작용을 통한 창의적인 해석을 촉발시킬 수 없다면 교과로서의 역할을 다했다고 볼 수 없다. 따라서 교과는 완결된 산물로 규정하기 보다는 생성되어 가는 구성물로 보는 것이 적절하다. 교과의 효용은 교과 내부에 있는 것이 아니라 그것이 어떠한 컨텍스트에서 활용될 수 있는가에 달려 있다고도 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 교과관이라는 교과의 근원적 성격을 통해서 종교교재의 문제를 성찰하고자 한다. 종교교재를 매개로하여 이루어지는 종교 수업상황에서 교육주체들이 어떻게 상호작용의 역동을 드러내는지도 분석될 것이다. 현 공교육의 토대에서 교과의 역할과 지위가 갖는 근본적인 가능성과 한계를 살펴보는 기회가 되리라 생각하며, 아울러 공교육의 제한된 시공 속에서 종교수업의 효과를 극대화 할 수 있는 방법을 찾는 하나의 계기가 되기를 기대한다.
This research aims to introspect the matters of textbook on religion in the schools of religious foundation from the view of subject. The significance of the subjects on religion in the schools is to give a chance for students to realize the meanings of their life and to contemplate their inner wor lds. It takes pr ior ity over all else, including the teaching the religious doctrines, dogmatic knowledges, and all the rest of it. The inflexible view of subject makes the religion class so stiff and formal that teacher cannot interact with the students dynamically. There are no free imaginations and critical eyes about religions in that classroom. The text on religion is not just ‘interpreted’ system, but ‘should be interpreted’ one. It means the text on religion cannot be the absolute scriptures like canon in the religion. It is one the way of motivations for stimulating the interaction between teacher and student. So the subject is created and formed in every kinds of class situation. The usefulness of texts is not in the inner side of it, but in the dynamic context of the class. In the class of religion, students are expected to interact with the teacher as creative interpreters and critics about the text.
