최근 다양한 분야에서 생명에 대한 논의가 급증하여 생명의 본질에 접근하려는 시도들이 증폭되고 있다. 이는 이상의 실현이라 여겨왔던 문명이기의 발달이 도리어 인류의 생존 그 자체를 위협하게 되었고, 그 결과 야기된 전지구적(全地球的) 문제의 심각성을 해결하고자 하는 시대적 요구라 할 수 있다. 이러한 요구에도 불구하고 생명의 본질에 대한 해명은 하나의 통일된 정의로 도출되기는 힘든 실정이다. 하지만 생명을 올바르게 이해하고자 하는 일련의 과정과 노력 속에서 생명 존엄성에 대한 자각은 물론이거니와 나아가 생명 경시 풍조에 대한 대안까지도 도출할 수 있는 순기능을 발휘할 것이다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 생명의 개념에 대한 재해석의 필요성을 제기하며, 특히 한국 근대의 신종교에 주목하고자 한다. 수운(水雲, 崔濟愚; 1824-1864), 증산(甑山, 姜一淳; 1871-1909), 소태산(少太山, 朴重彬; 1891-1943) 등 한국 신종교의 개창자들은 시대현실을 직시하고 그 누구보다 고해(苦海)의 현실을 개혁하고자 했던 역사적 대종교가들이었다. 그들은 빈곤과 질병으로 고통 받는 민중 구제와 나아가 민중들이 갈망하는 풍요로운 이상사회의 건설을 이루고자 하였다. 이를 위해 유불선 삼교(三敎)의 정수를 융합하고 그들의 종교체험을 바탕으로 고래(古來)의 가치관을 재편성하는 공통된 성격을 띠게 된다. 또한 민중에 대한 이해와 사랑을 기반으로 출발한 만큼 시대적 요구에 맞게 종래의 삼교에서 주장되는 생명관을 재해석하였다. 이것은 관점을 달리하면 한국 신종교사상의 공통의 문법인 개벽사상의 면모가 생명관념의 기저에 자리하고 있다는 것이다. 따라서 혁신과 개벽은 단지 조선 말에 국한된 과거의 유산이 아니며, 현시점에서 요구되는 난제의 하나인 생명윤리의 방향성을 제시해 줄 수 있는 생동하는 사상이라고 할 것이다. 그러므로 한국 근대 신종교의 생명관은 바로 이러한 풍조에 대한 대안을 제시할 현대적 의의를 지니고 있다.
As the time goes the importance of life rapidly increase in various fields of study. This could be seen as a way to overcome the serious problem caused by the rapid developing of civilization, which was believed as a way to materialize the world of utopia. Despite these kind of needs, the essence of life is not easily defined with one clear statement. However during the process of trying to understand what life is, we could become more aware of the life, and also would be able to find a way to resolve the trend of taking life lightly. Therefore, in this article, I wish to emphasize the need for redefining the meaning of ‘Life and also wish to focus of the New-found religion of Korea. Soo-Woon, Jeung-San, and So-Tae-San, the Founders of the new-religion of Korea saw through the reality of our society, and all wanted to reform the pain filled reality of that time. Their goal was to aid the poor and the sick people, and to create an utopia which all the people dreamt of. To do this, they fused together the essence of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. Then by using their own religious experiences, they all redefined the value of origin. Also, as they started off based with the love and understanding for the public, they reinterpreted the bio-ethics that were insisted by the Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. This, if seen on the other point of view, tells that fact that the Gae-Beuk ,which all Korean religion speaks of, is based on bio-ethics. Thus reformation and Gae-Beuk is not just a legacy limited in times of Chouson dynasty, but also a way that could help us solve the problem of today s bio-ethics. So the bio-ethics of Korea s New-religion contains the significance which would give us answers to today s trends.
