The purpose of this study is to obtain implications for music education by analyzing media usage patterns and music consumption in the daily life of elementary school students, who are currently in the alpha generation. For this purpose, a questionnaire and focus group interview were conducted. The study results are as follows. First, Generation Alpha started YouTube about two years earlier than Generation Z. They actively participated in mobile games and expressed themselves through content and game characters. They preferred subscriptions over algorithms on YouTube.
They knew what to watch out for on YouTube. Looking at the characteristics of music consumption of the alpha generation, they selected and listened to a variety of music while playing games. They preferred hip-hop rather than Newtro, and they wanted to pursue music in various ways online. As implications of music education, first, digital literacy was formed in them, but excessive dependence on smart devices and expression of hate should be cautioned. Second, it is necessary to make efforts to reflect their online music activities in music education. Third, it is necessary to reflect on individual music consumption habits so that there are no restrictions on music listening through subscriptions and algorithms.
