This study aimed to evaluate how depression changes in older adults and analyze the impact of caregiving grandchildren on changes in depression. The samples of this study were Chinese elderly aged 55 and above (N = 4937 at the baseline) from four waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) (2011-2018). The results of the study are as follows. Firstly, depression in older adults is a nonlinear change that slowly decreases, then gradually increases over time. Second, the frequency of caring for grandchildren had a positive relationship with the linear rate of change (β=.249, p<.05) and a negative association with the nonlinear rate of change (β = -.322, p<.05) in depression. In contrast, the intensity of grandchild care had a negative relationship with linear changes (β=-.268, p<.05) in depression and a positive relationship with nonlinear rates (β=.284, p<.05) of change. The current study discusses the implications of these results.
