This article is an exploratory endeavor to comprehend the notion of “Student Agency,” which has emerged as a prominent topic in the OECD future education discourse, including the recently Revised National 2022 Curriculum, in a more comprehensive and suitable manner within our educational context. In order to this goal, it is inferred that the term “agency,” an unfamiliar notion to us, is a concept that elucidates human self-understanding in Western culture, and highlights the absence of normality in contemporary academic discourse characterized by the “material turn.”
However, even though the OECD’s “2030 Education” project has been focusing more on academic discussions and the importance of redefining the concept of an educated person in the future society, It has been determined that when the notion of agency is translated into the notion of student agency, the student’s existence is restricted to learning, thus negating the manifestation of ontological agency. Thus, referring to Biesta’s discussion, an scholar actively extracts educational points from the concept of agency used after the material turn and presents essential points for the grown-up-ness of agency.
