This paper pays particular attention to human properties embodied in the work of British sculptor Rachel Whiteread, well known for the site-specific work that invokes the collective memory related to historical sites. While casting negative space with such industrial materials as plaster, resin, rubber, and concrete into a simple and subdued architectural construction, her work has been raising social, political, and historical issues. This paper, however, aims to unveil the inherent meanings covered under the muted appearance of her work. A closer look at her work reveals such clues as human skin, trace of time, scars, ghost, and death, thereby evoking a reflection on human body and human ways to recollect. Therefore, this paper intends to investigate her work by focusing on the following four ingrained human properties; vulnerability, individuality, mortality, and physicality. This paper aims to expand and reinforce the understanding of the apparently inhuman Whiteread’s work by uncovering the passage of time, memory, physical and psychological conditions of human beings.
