The purpose of this study was to find out what a child, who was neglected in a multicultural family, experienced through art therapies for emotional expression and what the experience signified. The study participant was a 12-year-old boy in his 5th year of elementary school who was raised in a multicultural family and experienced negligence. He participated in 10 therapy sessions once a week for 60 minutes in each session. The art therapy program was based on the lower branch of Mayer and Salovey’s(1997) 4-branch model of emotional intelligence, which was ‘perception, appraisal, and expression of emotion.’ The qualitative study of Creswell’s(2015) was applied to analyze data including participant’s artworks, recordings and verbatims collected from every session, and etc. Then, a total of 4 topics and 12 sub-topics were produced. The study was meaningful because it confirmed that the art therapy for emotional expression could provide opportunities for the child to expand his emotional expression and express his depressed emotion after conducting an overall exploring. Then, relationship building experience with the researcher and recognizing positive emotions of relationship with others in art therapy led to his relationship improvement with others. Based on these research results, the significance and limitations of the study were then discussed.
