The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Food Art Therapy programs on the self-expression and sociality of children from low-income families. For this purpose, the study selected 16 children in the first, second or third grade in elementary school. The children were from low-income families that were using services at two local children s centers in P City, and were characterized as having poor self-expression and a lack of sociality. These children were assigned to an experiment group of eight and a control group of eight. A program was devised, consisting of a total of ten 80-minute sessions with two sessions per week. The experiment group participated in the Food Art Therapy program from January 4 to February 13, 2018. Self-expression and sociality inventories were used for measurement purposes. The effects of the program were tested in Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon signed rank test with the SPSS 22.0 program. The findings show that the children who participated in the Food Art Therapy program made a significant increase in self-expression and sociality compared with the children that did not participate in the program. The program s positive effects on their self-expression and sociality were put to qualitative analysis based on the reports made by the participating children in the program and the investigator s observations. The program is significant in that it demonstrates that Food Art Therapy programs can be utilized effectively to improve the self-expression and sociality of children from low-income families.
