With the recognition of play that makes important contributions to all aspects of the child development, play takes higher status in special education. For the children with disabilities who cannot spontaneously participate in play, adult interventions are necessary. Appropriate adult involvement can enrich children's play experience and maximize play's impact on cognitive and social development. But adult involvement should be done in appropriate and sensitive ways because inappropriate adult intervention can disturb young children's play. Several roles for adults in play are following: uninvolved, onlooker, stage manager, co-player, play leader, director. The role on the extreme ends - uninvolved and director - tends to have a negative effect on disabled children's play experiences. Therefore, adult involvement should be done in various ways, according to young children's characteristics and play situations.
