Injuries or accidents are inevitable in sports games. The most appropriate and effective measures against this would be establishing sports insurance system and promoting sports insurance subscriptions. There are two aspects in sports insurance : human and physical (material). In human aspect, sports players, sports groups, amateur players, instructors or judges subscribe to sport injury insurance, sport liability insurance or sport safety insurance. In physical aspect, sports insurance can be classified into three types: sporting facility liability insurance for accidents in sports facilities; Per-activity sports insurance according to sport activities such as golf, ski, fishing, tennis and marathon, etc.; and sports event insurance for accidents at a large-scale sports event. Sports insurance system is well developed in France and Australia. In France, sports insurance subscription was an obligation for all participating sport groups, instructors and players to take part in a sports game, under the “rule on amateur sports insurance” (May 5, 1962). The key content of this rule passed on to the “Sports Act” (1984), and survived until today to many sports insurance stipulations including the obligation to subscribe to sports insurance, stipulated in the Article L321-1(e.g. Ordonnance n* 2006-596 du 23 mai 2006 relative ā la partie lgislative du code du sport). In Australia, CAS(Confederation of Australian Sport), in an effort to promote sports, introduced in 1977 sports personal accident polices for all sports players at $2 per head, irrespective of which sport was being played. The State of New South Wales, one of the prominent states in Australia, enacted “Sporting Injuries Insurance Act” to arrange insurance for injuries and illnesses of sports participants. I have a few suggestions for the development of the sports insurance policies and promotion of sports insurance subscriptions in Korea. Firstly, for the sport game with high accident rates, we need to make sports insurance subscription an obligation or a policy recommendation. Also, for sporting facility liability insurance, we need to improve obligatory subscription scheme, considering sports accident rates. On the other hand, for sports event insurance, it is necessary to at least partially phase in compulsory subscription policy, considering the venue or numbers of participants. Secondly, sports groups or clubs’ vigorous activities to promote the sports insurance will be a great help. Additionally, sports groups and the insurance industry should put much effort to establish sports insurance policy which facilitates competition in the insurance industry. Moreover, all different industries including insurance and medical industry and academia, as well as sport industry, should join forces to invigorate sports insurance.
