The Sewol Ferry that was heading towards Jeju Island in 2014 lost 304 precious lives due to its sinking. We often listen to the news regarding drowning accidents from mass communication every summer. However, Korean government still lacks solutions for these or safety measures. Most drowning accidents are caused by carelessness in safety and inexperience in swimming, which means there is a need to emphasize safety frigidity and the need for swimming education. This swimming education must be conducted in school, but there is still a shortage of effective policies for survival swimming. Especially, now that education for survival swimming is not provided due to the COVID-19 pandemic, safety education and new survival swimming education methods in summer are urgently needed. This study aims to analyze media reports focusing on news big data related to survival swimming and seek the directivity of future national policies and programs. For this study, frequency analysis, relation analysis and related word analysis were conducted using the BIG KINDS analysis program. after collecting the past 4-year data of 54 press companies and news media provided at BIG KINDS(www.bigkinds.or.kr), a news analysis system affiliated to Korea Press Foundation, from January 1st 2017 to December 31st 2020. The study results identified are as follows. First, current survival swimming policies are led by the Ministry of Education and the Office of Education and has a high relation with parents. Second, survival swimming is mostly focused on elementary school students and its attention has highly increased since the Sewol Ferry disaster. Third, it is thought that virtual reality and latest technology-based education and program need to be developed, since survival swimming education is restricted recently because of COVID-19. This study has significance by examining the recent media trends related to survival swimming and serving as basic data required for program and policy development for efficient survival swimming based on these study results.
