국문초록

American Psychiatric Association proposed some new mental disorders in the DSM-5 draft posted on February 10, 2010. Its list of the disorders not currently listed in DSM-IV-TR is surveyed briefly. 4 revision principles include clinical utility, recommendations based on research evidence, continuity with the contemporary edition, and no pre-determined constraints on changes. A distinguished feature of DSM-5 is shown in the risk syndrome category. In DSM-5 a preventive approach is developed in that it contains assessment of suicide risk and the new risk syndrome category. As the category psychosis risk syndrome as well as minor neurocognitive disorder are proposed to identify those at greatest risk for developing psychosis as well as major neurocognitive disorder, that is, dementia. DSM-5’s risk syndrome category emphasizes its utilitarian attitude that its potential benefit is greater than potential harm of excessive treatment and its stigma. The depersonalizing effect and process of the stigma in those diagnosed with a mental disorder is analyzed in terms of Link’s modified labeling theory. And the utilitarian calculation of benefit over harm is criticized.
