This articple is about an application of James W. Fowler’s faith development theory (FDT) for Christian(pastoral) counseling. FDT has been widely used in Christian education, but it has not been effectively applied to the practice of Christian(pastoral) counseling, partly due to the misunderstandings and prejudices about the theory. As a Christian(pastoral) counselor and researcher, I have found that the client showed clinical symptoms such as depressive mood, emptiness, loneliness, inferiority, and the lack of joy. However, I also figured out that the reasons for experiencing those symptoms came from narcissisn, and the problems of)) the self–structure,)) identity formation, and 3) faith development process. Using questions and contents of the FDT is effective and helpful in Christian(pastoral) counseling practice. Especially, moving from Stage 3 (Synthetic–Conventional Faith) to Stage 4 (Individuative–Reflective Faith) is particularly important.
