본 연구의 목적은 성경에 기록된 야곱과 레아의 장자인 르우벤의 삶을 르우벤에 관한 성경 본문을 바탕으로 하여 Bowen이론의 관점, 특히 자기분화와 삼각관계를 중심으로 조명해보고자 하였다. 르우벤의 삶을 Bowen이론의 관점에서 조명해본 결과, 르우벤이 탁월한 능력을 가지고 장자로 태어났지만 장자의 역할을 하지 못하였고, 간음죄를 지었다. 그래서 아버지 야곱의 축복을 받지 못하게 된 르우벤이 부모와의 역기능적인 관계 속에서 성장하면서 미숙한 내면세계를 가지고 있었다는 점을 추론하였다. 즉 르우벤은 자기분화 수준이 낮으며, 부모가 정서적 긴장이 있고 부와 소원하며 모와 정서적으로 융합된 형태의 삼각관계에 놓여 있었다는 것을 추론하고 그 의미를 논의하였다.
The purpose of this study is to consider the life of Reuben, based on the Bible, who is the firstborn of Jacob and Lea from the perspective of Bowen theory, focusing on self–differentiation and triangulation. Following is the result. Although Reuben was the firstborn with competence he could not perform the role of the eldest son, committed adultery, and could not get the blessing from his father Jacob. It was known that Reuben had immature inner world because he was grown up in dysfunctional relationship with his parents. In other words Reuben kept low level of self–differentiation and got jammed in triangulation because there was emotional tension between his parents. And Reuben was both estranged from his father and fused with his mother emotionally.
