This study was conducted with the aim of validating the Mentalization Questionnire (MZQ) developed by Hausberg et al.(2012) for Korean adults. A total of 406 data were collected for general adult men and women aged 19-39 nationwide, and were used randomly in two groups. The first group(N=203) were used as exploratory factor analysis data, and the second group(N=203) were used as confirmatory factor analysis. In the exploratory factor analysis, two questions were excluded and some were different from the original scale, but This study was rather similar to a study that validated Korean adolescents (Song Hyun-joo et al., 2017). It was confirmed as 4 factors, and in the confirmatory factor analysis, the 4 factor model was found to be suitable. Internal consistency of all questions was .869, and It was higher than in a study on the original study and on the study for Korean adolescents. The criterion validities were verified using the Empathy Questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire(PHQ-9), the Korean version of Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale(K-BDEFS-SF). The mentalization scale showed a significant correlation only with the psycho-equivalence mode factor with empathy, and showed a significant relationship with all sub-factors of depression and execution function. While there was a difference in the factor structure from the original scale, it shows a similar structure to the study of Korean adolescents, indicating that cultural differences related to emotions are an important factor in understanding the ambiguous concept of mentalization. It is meaningful in that it proposed the necessity of psychiatric research considering the cultural characteristics of emotional awareness in Korea.
