This study applied the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) to examine the actor-partner effects of the relationship between communication and family function and depression. Data from 116 mother-child pairs were analyzed. The result of the study is, First, open communication showed actor effects on both mother's and child's depression, and actor-partner effects on family function were significant. Second, closed communication showed actor effects on both mother's and child's depression, and a significant partner effect on mother's depression. Also, closed communication demonstrated actor effects on family function for both individuals and a partner effect on mother’s perception of family function. Third, the mediating effect of family function in the relationship of both types of communication and depression was not significant. Although the study did not confirm the mediating effects, it is meaningful that APIM revealed that mother-adult children's communication, family function, and depression are in an interdependent relationship with an actor-partner effect.
