There were people who narrated orally a historical story and an official
history to the masses and contributed continuously such stories to magazine
and newspaper from the half of the 1920s to the first half of the 1940s, and
they were called ‘professional historical storytellers’.
In the late 1927, the movement of historical romance began and professional
historical tellers appeared. They moved an audience to laughter and tears by
narrating and radiocasting such stories. The reception room in a house for
male guests and discussible fields as storyteller’s stage of activity were replaced
by radio. Popular historical storyteller of radio broadcasting went into the
competition of historical storytelling, and the field was a great success with
paid attendances.
Jin-goo Kim, Baek-nam Yoon, Jeong-eun Shin as representative storytellers
showed their individual and steady modes of oral narration. Jin-goo Kim
controled the atmosphere of field by using Dam-noi(談腦) as a strategic
equipment, and Baek-nam Yoon maximized exquisite beauty of change by
being accompanied by gesture. And Jeong-eun Shin attempted to
communicate with audience. Professional historical storytellers achieved reputation as famous people of society and obtained financial compensation.
On the other hand, their commercial and past oriented attitudes became the
focus of criticism. Nevertheless, they were significant because they provided
to people with historical enjoyment by sharing historical romance.
