Purpose: This study was done to examine contemporary non-pharmacological interventions for vocally disruptive
behavior (VDB) and to define directions for further research by reviewing related research studies. Methods:
Analysis was done of 24 articles related to dementia and VDB in elders in residential facilities or long-term care
settings, published between 1997 and 2010. Results: The theoretical literature outlines non-pharmacological
interventions: behavioral modification and person-centered care for nursing home residents with VDB, and
educational program and flexibility and support for nurses. Despite the researchers use of the different types of
interventions available for individuals with dementia who present with VDB, such as behavioral therapy, caregivers
training, and combination therapy, the intervention effects were generally modest. Conclusion: In the current
studies, the limited efficacious management suggests most aspects surrounding VDB are insufficiently
understood. Various interventions and staff training need further investigation to overcome the behavior and
related suffering.
