An exploring of family therapy is becoming popular among Korean professional in the field of social and behavioral sciences. However, there have been a few of researches on application of the American model of therapy to the situation of the Korean family. The present paper has been developed out of the author\'s multicultural contact and experience in American during the period of 1997-98.
This paper attempts to contrast the American family with the Korean family in terms of the family relationships or family structures, the family cycles, and the networks of communication among the family members. As the most significant difference in the value systems between the two family cultures the Korean family in general puts its value on an sense of connectedness in which a person is regarded as a part of the embedded inter-connectedness of relationships. On the contrary, the American family stresses the value of separated ness and are conscious of one\'s autonomy, accordingly.
This study also points to the fact that in most cases of therapy the role expectation of the therapist by his or her clients entirely depends upon a variety of cultures. Particularly, most Korean clients expect form the therapist his or her being authoritative, directive and closely connected as if he or she were a family member.
