This research analyzed the strategic leadership competence of the CEOs
(the Chief Executive Officers) of the foreign language institutes in Korea.
The research methods were as follows. First, for the research target, a
total number of 300 CEOs from different areas of different age groups and
of different size institutions in Korea were analyzed, Second, for the
research questionnaire four sub-areas to test the strategic leadership
capabilities were designed. Third, quantitative analysis methods such as
t-test and ANOVA used for the statistical data analysis.
The main results of this paper are as follows:
First, according to the respondents, it showed that except for the number
of employees, there was no significant difference in individual's competence
to establish visions of the organization. Second, except for the number of
employees, there was no significant difference in other characteristics of
individual's ability to carry out the mission of the organization. Third,
according to the different number of employees, the CEOs of the
organization showed significant difference in their competence to establish
strategies. Fourth, the individual CEOs showed no significant difference in making strategies and performing capability. Fifth, the results showed that
the university graduates scored higher marks than college graduates in the
tests analyzing one's ability to form visions and competence to establish
strategies for the management of the organization. In addition, CEOs with
master's or doctorate degree scored higher marks than college graduates.
Sixth, after analyzing the individual's background to see the difference in
their ability to form strategies for managing the organization, and according
to the results, different individuals showed significant difference partly in
recognizing the importance of education, making judgments, showing
visions and analyzing matters. Furthermore, looking at the differences of
individual characteristics of CEOs of the foreign language institutes in the
areas of settling the strategies and performing them, they were affected by
the age of the CEOs and the number of people employed in the
organization.
To conclude, this research showed that: First, for the growth and
development of the foreign language institutes, it is necessary to raise the
strategic leadership competence. Second, in order to raise the strategic
leadership of the CEOs of the English institutions, it is essential to have
higher education. Third, continuous education and training are needed for
the development and growth of the foreign language institutes and to
increase the competence of the CEO.
