It is not easy to find right books for children. It can not solve the problem of
choosing right books for children if we spend a lot of times to just read the
children's books. Due to this rapid expansion of the English Education Program, but
we are now facing difficulties selecting books appropriate for the children's reading
level. There was not enough information about the guide for choosing good English
books for children. So it is hard to find the appropriate books for our children to
enjoy reading books. English story book is not a text book. Most of the books in
English have been proven to be a useful tool or material for teaching English. First
of all, we have to think about main elementary factors of book and then we have to
consider the children's reading development ability and also the children's English
ability. The purpose of this study was to find out the elementary factors for
selecting English story books. First of all, we have to consider what is the goals and
the targets for English reading education. In the second chapter, we have to review
the five stages of reading development of Jean Chall. In the third chapter, there are
the collected datas of criteria of other researchers, so we can review the elements of
formal English story books that are interesting for children. In the fourth chapter,
there are three categories are presented; types of books, three best authors and
writers of the children's picture books in the world and children's book awards and
prizes. There were the list of the Educators' Top 100 Children's Books of
NEA(National Education Association) and the list of main authors and writers of
children's books at the appendex. The purpose of my study and this paper is to
assist to how to select the good or best English story books for children. I think
this is just beginning in our country to research about this field, so I also keep
going to study and research.
