This study investigated if TA-based group art therapy could help mothers to change their parenting
attitude and their children's problematic behavior. Children aged 5 to 6 attending a kindergarten in city U
were administered K-CBCL, a child-adolescent problematic behavior scale. The mothers of 20 children whose
scores were above 60T in the domains of internalization and externalization on the scale were asked to be
the participants for the study. Among them, 10 mothers agreed to participate in the study. They were
divided into the control group of 5 and the experimental group of 5. The therapy program ran 12 sessions
from February 12th, 2012 to March 21st, 2012, twice a week, each session 60 to 120 minutes long. The
instruments for the study included MBRI, a parenting attitude scale and K-CBCL, a child-adolescent
problematic behavior scale. A pretest and posttest were given before and after the program. A follow-up
evaluation was also given 4 weeks after the program to compare the means and standard deviations. Data
were analyzed using a nonparametric test. Mann Whitney U test was performed to check the homogeneity
between the groups. To check the effect of this program, Wilcoxon's signed ranks test was used to analyze.
It was found that TA-based group art therapy was effective in changing the mothers' parenting attitude and
also the children's problematic behavior. The significance of this study is that TA-based group art therapy
is tried to change mothers' parenting attitude. And that it can cause some changes of their children's
problematic behavior.
