The purpose of this study was to introduce transtheoretical model that is easily applicable behavioral change theory to accommodate healthier lifestyes of the elderly, and to evauate recent stream and effects of exericise intervention rresearch based on this theory. Transtheoretical model was developed by Prochaska and DiClemente in 1983 and originated to induce positive behavioral changes of the individuals through appropriate stage-dependent inteventions. The behavioral change consists of five stages; precontemplation , contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Each of these stages can be assessed by a ceratin sets of corresponding questionnaires. The change process is a series of experiences, including 10 steps of behavioral process; consciousness raising, dramatic relief, self-reevaluation, environmental reevaluation, social liberation, counter conditioning, helping relationship, reinforcement management, self liberation, and stimulus control. Each step has its own unique change process and thereby different strategies are required for each stage. Because one 's change progress may depend on the cultural context that he or she is involved in, the goal of regular exercise will be achieved only when adequate strategies are set up with enough assessment of the change process of Korean geriatric popuration. As there have been few domestic research on exercise intervention based on transtheoretical model that is useful for behavioral change, further research is needed to prepare for the coming aged society more effieciently.
