The purpose of this study was to analyze the job success factors of workers with
intellectual disabilities by investigating the employment factors of workers with intellectual
disabilities who graduated from special school and differences in the perceptions of
employment among the concerned individuals. For that purpose, this study interview and
survey three workers with intellectual disabilities that graduated from a special school and
12 of their caregivers, employers, personnel staff, and colleagues. Results of this study
were as follows: First, the success factors in the stage of employment initiation of
workers with intellectual disabilities include willingness to find a job and sense of purpose,
positive self-image and smooth interpersonal relationships, preparation for employment and
vocational abilities, education for colleagues before their employment, and support for
social participation. Second, the success factors in the stage of employment maintenance of
workers with intellectual disabilities include efforts on the part of national policies and
concerned agencies, cooperative and supportive systems among the concerned organization,
formats of work that consider the characteristics of workers with intellectual disabilities,
cooperation among business, special school, and home, and work abilities and productivity.
Third, the success factors in the stage of employment stability of workers with intellectual
disabilities include integrated social atmosphere, family support, employer's firm
determination, willingness for social participation, job introduction, and follow-up
instructions. Therefore, the individual and job factors, legal and institutional factors, and
social and environmental factors work as core job success factors in the stage of
employment initiation, maintenance, and stability, respectively.
