청각 기억 과정은 다른 기억과 유사하게 단기 기억(shortterm memory), 장기 기억(long-term memory), 감각 기 억(sensory memory) 등으로 구분이 된다(Aaronson, 1974; Baddeley, 1986, 1999, 2003; Cowan, 1984; 조수진, 2012). 이 단기 기억의 내용은 반복이 되면서 장기 기억으 로 저장이 된다. 이러한 기능의 세부 형태에 대하여 여러 견해가 있지만, 대체로 단기 기억은 추가적인 처리 과정이 없는 상대적으로 단순한 기억 과정으로 분류가 된다 (Baddeley, 2003). 이 단기 기억은 언어를 학습하고 이해 하는 과정에도 관여하면서 다른 기능의 기억 과정과도 연결 이 된다(Baddeley, 1986). 이 단기 기억에 추가 처리 과정 이 연결될 수가 있으며, 그 전체 과정을 작업 기억이라고 한다. 그리고, 이 작업 기억 능력은 중간과정에서의 중첩된 과정이며 주어진 자극을 저장하고 처리하는 것을 포함한다 (Baddeley, 1986, 1999).
Backward digit span was frequently adopted as a useful tool for evaluating auditory working memory and learning. The detailed response data, however, were not available for backward Korean digit span sets. In this study, backward Korean monosyllable digit spans were examined in normal hearing young adults with special reference to the previous forward Korean digit span data. The stimuli were synthesized in 1 to 10 Korean digit spans of male and female voices. They were randomly presented through the closed acoustic system for 20 subjects (10 males and 10 females). The corresponding backward digit span responses were recorded and analyzed on the custom-made computerized workstation. In this result, no statistically significant differences were observed in terms of the lateralization (left/right) and the gender of the subjects and speakers (p > .01). The average performance point of 50% was determined at the index value of about 6 in this backward Korean digit span study. This led to about 2 index differences from the average values of forward and backward digit span data (p < .01). This discrepancy corresponded to the additional processing in the backward digit span task model. In conclusion, the data exhibited the similar trends as those from backward digit spans with other languages. These backward and forward digit spans can contribute to exploring auditory memory functions and the related clinical implications.
