The purpose of this paper is to give an answer to the questions of what the Mojing was originally designed for and of how the Mojing solved its problematic. In my view, what originally motivated the writing of the Mojing was to solve the problematic of how an individual man could love others universally and of what is the role of pragmatic utility as a consequence in constituting a real virtue, both of which were related to the core claims of universal love (jian-ai, 兼愛) and practical utility (shi-yong, 實用) suggested by early Moists as opposed to the Confucian emphasis on preferential love and on mere good will. The Neo-Moist method to solve this problematics was a disputation (bian, 辯), which can be characterized as a search for some necessary conditions or presuppositions for certain subject matter through the process of verbal description. What they found at last was that universality could be obtained through our intentions and that virtue consisted not of the mere results, but of intentions together with capacities related.
