This paper aims to examine critically Antonio Negri & Michael Hardt's politics of multitude with reference to the 'candle demonstration.' Negri and Hardt try to understand the new power relations in the globalized world in their Empire and Multitude. Although their works are usually acclaimed as the new Spinozist politics, I think there are some considerable differences between their politics and Spinoza's philosophy. First, their politics of multitude takes its base in the Spinozan distinction between potentia and potestas, whereas one could not find it in Spinoza's own politics. Second, in contrast to the politics of multitude where multitude stands for the political subject par excellence, Spinoza's multitudo is not the subject but ambivalent foundation of the state. Third, contrary to their argument, Spinoza maintains that democracy can only realize itself in the State and political institutions.
