The buddhist theory of mind-cultivation corresponds to the theory of character-cultivation in the field of education. Wonhyo (617-686), the most famous monk in Korean history, defined human mind as one and same mind and divided this one and same mind into two kinds: one, original pure mind, the other, polluted impure mind in the famous books: Taeseung-Kieshin-non-so and Byel-kie. Wonhyo suggests the best theoretical way of purifying the polluted impure mind into the original pure mind in his theory of mind-cultivation. Wonhyo regarded. in his theory, the original pure mind as the aim of character-cultivation and the polluted impure mind as the very mind to. be cultivated and purified with all one's might and main. Wonhyo explained that human original pure mind began to be polluted since man divided the originally undivided one mind into two parts: subjective mind and objective mind, and wanted to draw more into his subjective mind. from surrounding objective world. Wonhyo called the way in which human original pure mind began to be polluted the mind-polluting process that is negative cultivation process, and he called the way in which human polluted impure mind began to be purified the mind-purifying process, that is positive cultivation process. In terms of today's education. the latter process is of great importance in that this suggests the concrete aim and method of character cultivation.
