The world seems to have no reason for being. Man who has been thrown into the world seems to have no reason for his being, either. But the fact that man has no innated reason for his being when he was thrown into the world makes him "free." If man has any "given" meaning or purpose for his being, he cannot give his reasons for his being and cannot be "free", either. Because the thing which was already given cannot be chosen. For the reason, he who is aware of his "facticity" can exercise his act of choosing, based upon his being free. In the act of choosing, man brings his values into his being. This means that man can create his own values. With his created values, man can give his reasons for his being for himself which were not there when he was born. However, man should be responsible for his freedom and the result of his choices. Freedom is only half-a truth, if there follows no responsibleness. However, man is tempted to escape his responsibleness from freedom and feels easy by avoiding his burdens of responsibleness. This kind of phenomenon is called a "fallen" life, according to Heidegger. The "fallenness" of man's being has such a life as "the public," "the one," "one among many," "an objective man," "a statistical man," or "a functionary of organizating," etc ., not as a subjectivity who is aware of his being free. He who has such a life seems to be getting lost his humanness. The modern man who lives in a highly developed, technological and complex society is getting more tempted to escape his responsibleness, because man tends to be dominated by the machines rather than he dominates over them. He may even worship the machines. The modern man in a modern society is difficult to have his life as an "authentic" person who can create his own values by the act of choosing. He who has' an authentic life is supposed not to have a life as the loss of humanness. Therefore it is defined that the loss of humanness is a person who cannot exercise his freedom of choice, and, as a corollary, who do not have his function as a values creator. It is supposed in this study that the efforts for the regainning of humanness can be achieved by the following three constituent awarenesses: 1. I am a "choosing" agent, unable to avoid choosing my way through life. 2. I am a "free" agent, absolutely free to set the goals of my own life. 3. I am a "responsible" agent, personally accountable for my free choices as they are revealed in how I live my life (V.C. Morris, 1966, p.135). The above efforts with the three constituent awarenesses seem to be the very educational activities themselves. That is, education is a process of developing awareness about the freedom to choose and the responsibleness for one's choices.
