The purpose of this study was to analyze the trends in recent research on group counseling as reflected in 46 articles of the Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1975-1979. Criteria for analysis were 13 variables related to research methodology such as dependent variables, composition of samples, methods of sample selection, composition of the group, composition of the group meeting, and assessment of treatment effects. Following results were derived from the study. 1. Major dependent variables studied in 46 articles were self-disclosure, assertive behavior, communication, anxiety, group process and development, personality variables, career planning and attitudes, GPA and study habits, and others. 2. Research studies relied heavily on college student as subject populations, combined sex composition of samples, and 25-50 subjects as the size of sample employed. 3. Volunteers sampling was used most as the method of sample selection while random sampling least. 4. Graduate students including doctoral candidates were used predominatingly as groupleaders. The group size employed most was five to ten members. And most groups were consisted of male and female samples. 5. Most groups met five to eight weekly -to-2-hour group sessions. 6. Pretest or posttest to assess the treatment effects was administered in most studies while follow-up test increasingly.
