It was in September of 1946 when "Social Studies" carne to advent for the first time in the Korean primary school curriculum as an untegrated subject centered on daily life. It appeared as a part of "new education movement" which tried to wipe out the vestiges of Japanese imperialism. The man who introduced social studies to Korea for the first time was Mr. Huh, Hyun, who was supported by Dr. Oh, Chun-Suk, deputy director of education and the editorial officers including Mr. Lee, Sang-Sun of the U. S. Military Government Office at that time. However, several editorial officers objected to the introduction of Social Studies in that it was the imitation of American curriculum and that it could destroy the Korean academic system. The professors of social studies agreed, in general, on the latter opinion. At that time the Department of Social Studies was established in the College of Education of Seoul National University by Dean Chang, Lee-Wook. For those who worked for the introduction of this new subject, only insufficient reference materials were available. For example, only syllabus of social studies they could collect from the U. S. was that of Colorado State.
