A curriculum design is subject to demands emanating from the community and the Self. It is profitless to argue too much about which is prior to the other, because to a large extent one is defined by the other. The important matter is that schooling shall enable. the indivdual to exploit the resources of his culture for the good life and in some measure to contribute to these resources. Although the culture forms a collectivized pool value potentialities, the contributions to it and the uses of them can be highly individualized. The Self can be defined by the unique way that a person participates in the culture.
