This is a case study to verify the effect of sandtray therapy on the insecure
attachment and the improvement of self-esteem. The subject is 12-years old girl
who is going in 5th grade of 00 elementary school in G city. The therapy was
implied to relieve her insecure attachment. I employed mother attachments scale
and self-esteem scale before and after the sandtray therapy to check the change of
scores. I also did qualitative analysis on her verbal and nonverbal expressions each
session. The case was in total 12 sessions from October 25th 2012 to 28 December
2012, once a week, 50 minutes a session.
The results were as follows: First, through the inner experience with sandtray
therapy, her insecure attachment to parents became securer. Second, through the
interaction within sandtray therapy, her self-image became positive and her
self-esteem was improved. Therefore, this study demonstrates that sandtray
therapy provides emotional and psychological security to the mother and children
with insecure attachments, resulting in increased positive self expression and
improved self-esteem.
