이 논문은 조선시대 ‘유교정치학’의 집대성이라 할 만한 퇴계의 성학 론(聖學論)이 어떤 정치학적 의미를 내포하는지, 또 그의 정치적 언설이 어떠한 특징을 가지고 있는 지에 대해 살펴보고자 기획하였다. 그리고 이러한 논의를 진행하기 위해 이 논고에서는 퇴계 정치철학의 결정체인 성학십도(聖學十圖)와 정치 담론의 집약으로 볼 수 있는 상소문 ｢무 진육조소｣를 주요 논증자료로 채택하였다. 이를 통해 퇴계의 ‘성학=유 교정치학의 정수’ 혹은 삼위일체의 정치 담론(학문과 도덕 및 정치의 삼위일체)의 다채로운 양상을 고찰하였다. ‘도덕=정치=학문’이라는 도식 은 동아시아 유교사상사에서 매우 중요한 의미를 지니고 있다. 즉 이 도식은 거의 모든 유학자의 의식구조 속에 자리 잡고 있던 기본적 사유 형태였다. 퇴계의 경우도 마찬가지이며, 이러한 의식구조 하에서 자기만 의 독특한 학설 체계(성학의 체계와 새로운 천견론과 같은 입장)를 만 들어내었다고 볼 수 있다. 그에 따라 유학자들의 정치적 담론은 도덕과 학문의 영역을 벗어나지 않았으며, ‘도덕=정치=학문’이라는 도식 하에서 다채로운 정치적 담론도 이루어졌다. 감히 이 논문에서 ‘유교정치학’이라는 용어를 퇴계의 ‘성학’ 과 동일시한 것도 그 때문이다. 결국 퇴계의 유교정치학적 의미에서의 탁월함은 위와 같은 도식을 더욱 정밀히 하고 체계화함으로써 정국의 안정과 조화로운 정치를 지향했다는 점에 있을 것이다.
This study investigated what political meanings the theory of sage learning of Teogye Lee Hwang, which is a summation of ‘The Politics of Confucianism” in Jeoseon Dynasty, includes and what characteristics his political discourse has. And in order to progress such discussion, this research selected the appeal Mujin Yukchoso , the integration of political discourse and ten diagrams on sage learning, which is a fruit of political philosophy of Toegye, as a major materials for demonstration. And it considered diversified perspectives of political discourse (trinity of study, morality, and politics) of trinity or ‘Sage Learning = quintessence’ of Toegye in the Politics of Confucianism. The diagram of ‘morality = politics = study’ includes a very important meaning on the history of Confucian thought. This means that this diagram was a basic thought form that was placed on the mindset of almost all Confucians. Likewise, Toegye also made his own distinctive system of theory within this mindset. Therefore, the political discourse of Confucians did not deviate from the domain of morality and study, and various political discourses were established under the diagram of ‘morality=politics=study.’ That is why the word ‘The Politics of Confucianism’ was equated with ‘Sage Learning’ of Toegye Lee Hwang on this study. Ultimately, the excellence in the meaning of the politics of Confucianism of Toegye Lee Whang takes place in the fact that it made this diagram more precise and systematized and pursuit stability of political situation and harmonizing politics.
