The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the leisure awareness and
leisure constraints affecting sociability of middle school students according to Gender.
A descriptive survey design with a Purposive Sampling Method was used and data
collection was done using a self-report questionnaire answered by 255 middle school
students from middle schools located in Seoul, Gyeonggi provinces. T-test, Pearson
correlation coefficients, and hierarchial multiple regression were used the SPSS WIN
18.0 Program to analyze the data. With respect to gender, the students were found
to be in 2 groups, whose differences in sociability were significant. Sociability had
significant positive correlation with positive leisure emotion(r=.533, p<.001), leisure
confidence(r=.629, p<.001), leisure awareness(r=.636, p<.001), social natural(r=.894,
p<.001), affability e(r=.809, p<.001), group activity preference(r=.802, p<.001) and
Caring for others(r=.802 p<.001), and negative correlation with leisure activity
participation intention(r=-.183, p=.004), leisure sports satisfaction(r=-.130, p=.043),
interpersonal leisure constraints(r=-.196, p=.002), personal leisure constraints(r=-.485,
p<.001), Structural leisure constraints(r=-.199, p=.001), and leisure constraints(r=-.414,
p<.001). In the hierarchial multiple regression analysis, 4 characteristic were
controlled. Leisure confidence and leisure constraints regarding gender significantly
predicted of sociability. : Leisure confidence and personal leisure constraints were
significant predictors for 49.9% of sociability for the male group. Leisure confidence
and interpersonal leisure constraints were significant predictors for 31.3% of
sociability for the female group. Findings of this study allow a comprehensive
understanding of sociability and related factors among middle students in Korea.
Further study with a larger random sample from various middle schools is necessary.
