The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between physical fitness and body composition in hospitalized patients with pulmonary tuberculosis(PTB). The subjects were 71 men patients(mean age: 49.1±10yr) who had hospitalized more than 3 months at tuberculosis hospital located in Seoul. Using fat-free mass(FFM) index 73.2% of subjects were characterized by FFM depletion. And total muscle mass and lower and upper limb muscle mass and functional physical fitness of subjects were lower in comparison with normal adults. FFM, total muscle mass and lower limb muscle mass have significant correlation in functional physical fitness(p<.05), but except flexibility. The predictor of 6-min walk test was lower limb muscle mass(R2=.429, p=.000). Such a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, patients with PTB have lower muscle mass, especially lower limb muscle, and funcional physical fitness. Thus, the vast research will be needed to management of body composition and improvement of physical fitness in patients with PTB.
