This study investigated the effects of art therapy on the marital satisfaction and state trait anxiety of a
middle-aged man. The participant was 48 years old. He was not satisfied with his married life and had an
anxiety problem. The art therapy ran for 30 sessions and lasted from February 17, 2012 to December 20,
2012, once or twice a week or once a month. The research questions are as follows. First, what are the
effects of art therapy on the marital satisfaction of the participant? Second, what are the effects of art
therapy on reducing the state trait anxiety of the participant? The study instruments included the Martial
Satisfaction Scale(MSS) and State Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI). The data were analyzed comparing the
descriptive statistics from the scores on a pretest, post-test, and follow-up evaluation, all of which measured
the marital satisfaction and state trait anxiety. The findings are as follows. First, art therapy had a positive
effect on the marital satisfaction of the participant. Second, art therapy had a positive effect on reducing the
state trait anxiety of the participant. These findings suggest that the art therapy intervention had positive
effects on the psychology of and further overall married life of the participant.
