The current community college education should seek a new teaching method to
educate manpower which is demanded in the knowledge-based society of the future. In
an increased demand for this trend, Community Based Learning(CBL) came to the
fore. For CBL to be set up as a practical teaching-learning method, there is a need
for establishing theoretical system of CBL. Therefore, this study carried out the
theoretical analysis of CBL by investigating its concept, theoretical backgrounds, basic
assumptions, characteristics, components, and the differences between and existing
teaching-learning methods.
The main focus of the interest in this study was shown through the following three
aspects. First, experiential learning, constructivism, and cognitivism which are the
theoretical bases of CBL were described. Second, concepts and components of local
society experimental study have been identified, and reorganized the applying method
for the community college. Finally, expected performances and effects were analysed
in discussion on the educational value of CBL. And some pedagogical implications of
CBL related to the practical education were suggested focusing on the shift to the
learner-centered instruction, the contribution to vocational education accountability of
community college, and the good teaching between teacher and students.
